Royal Bank Of Scotland: Understanding individual impact through artwork

“Is this a nice to, or a must do?”

This was one of the first questions I explored when putting a proposal together for RBS for a Transformational Creativity session. Transformational Creativity involves taking a number of delegates through a visualisation process, then they create an oil on canvas piece to express something of the inner self.

Personality - Caring
Personality - Patience
Personality - Enthusiasm
Personality - Direction

RBS already have a very well established training and development programme for their key people. The challenge for me was to bring something fun, creative and experiential, and yet have the grounding and framework behind it for delegates to have a meaningful learning experience that will change behaviours back in the workplace.

Painting is fun, it is a “nice to”. Most people have painted since they were about 7 years old. So why is this becoming a “must do” as far as RBS are concerned?

Well, this pilot session, obtained with help from The Wizards Network, is still being evaluated, but it seems that delegates enjoyed:

- The sincere and open dialogue it created. There were a lot of tears and a lot of laughter!
- The way its makes learning come alive and personal
- Quick and accurate understand of personality types
- A more profound understanding of the impact they had on their team.
- A clear idea of the behaviours that need to be adopted to respect team members more fully

The paintings created by the delegates then related directly to paintings I have created around personality types, (based on Jung and MBTI thought). This provided a framework for a open and honest discussion where issues could be raised with safety due to the abstract nature of the painting.

If you think your organisation could benefit from something similar, or if you are a training consultancy that likes to employ new and exciting ways to get your message across, drop me an email.
